About Us

Our History

In 1982, Dr. Barry Nicholls bought Staples Veterinary Hospital (the first veterinary hospital in Calhoun County) from Dr. Wilfred Staples. The practice grew and expanded with the help of Dr. David Hillman, Dr. Susan LeCoq, Dr. Tom Nelson and others until it no longer fit the building and so, was moved to the present location at 719 Quintard Avenue. Recognizing the need for a facility staffed 24 hours a day and providing emergency and CCU care, the practice and its staff of 30+ began to provide those services in the early 2000's.

Today, Animal Medical Center has a veterinarian and a veterinary assistant on site 24 hours a day and provides everything from basic wellness care like puppy and kitten visits, to routine patient care and surgery, orthopedic surgeries, internal medicine, oncology services, behavioral medicine, advanced diagnostic equipment like digital radiography and ultrasound, and treatment of most companion animals exotic animal medicine.

While the practice serves the large area of northeast Alabama, it is still locally-based and deeply committed to the nearby communities.
